European Aluminum Association has become a true centre of excellence for life cycle thinking After more than 10 years of dedication investment and research the EAA comes up with state of the art validated methodologies rigourously collected and thoroughly assessed data to show what resources are saved by using lightweight corrosion resistant and strong aluminium in products such as cars trucks aircraft food packaging windows façades solar panels and other renewable energy equipment In order to highlight such expertise and dedication the European Aluminium Industry has recently published in cooperation with Springer publisher a special edition of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment which contains 11 papers from various experts from the Aluminium industry and LCA community Among these 11 papers the 3 first papers are freely downloadable from the Spinger website In his foreword Rudolph P Huber EAA Chairman states We are proud that our industry can collaborate with the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment to showcase the importance of life cycle thinking for the aluminium industry Did you know that three quarters of all the aluminium ever produced since the 1880s are still in productive use This stock has grown to about 600 million tonnes and

  • European Aluminium | Home Page » EAA presents Study on Aluminium for Safer trucks together with Transport and Environment
EAA together with Transport Environment T E have presented to the press on 20 March a study on the design of tractor fronts for optimised safety and fuel consumption The Safer Trucks concept brings a valuable contribution to road safety and environment by improving three aspects passive safety aerodynamics and safety of vulnerable road users EAA Automotive Transport group has extensively worked with FKA Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen Aachen on a design concept for crash boxes or Crash Management System at the front of trucks cabin that would absorb energy in case of a frontal crash with a vehicle The share of lorries in fatal accidents is disproportionate trucks represent 3 of the vehicle fleet but are involved in 18 of fatal accidents EU27 in 2008 The study shows that the severity of car to truck accidents could be significantly reduced if an 80 cm energy absorbing crash box was used at the front of a tractor A crash could be 15 less intense for cars therefore reducing the severity of cars to trucks collisions Furthermore designing crash boxes in aluminium can save 50 of the weight while maintaining the same crash performance The following objectives could be met with limited costs for transport manufacturers Between 3 200 and 3 800 accidents involving trucks with less harmful consequences each year taking as baseline the 7 070 fatalities in 2008 in EU27 Including 300 fatalities per year among vulnerable users thanks to reduced blind spots and a deflecting shape of the cabin Reducing CO2 emissions between 3 2 and 5 3 for a 40t haul truck Saving 1 500 per year on average for fuel consumption Leaflet Aluminium for safer trucks The full report can be downloaded here Smarter Safer Cleaner Summary from Transport Environment About European Aluminium Association The European Aluminium Association

  • European Aluminium | Home Page » GDA/DAVR – Aluminium packaging: recycling protects the climate
79 300 tonnes of the 91 800 tonnes on the market were recycled This equals a rate of recycling of 86 4 In particular for aluminium beverage cans in the deposit system GVM estimates a rate of return of 96 This is the highest amount in Europe In Germany we have well established structures for the collection and recycling of used packaging and there is a high degree of motivation to cooperate among the people This way the recycling loop for aluminium packaging can be largely completed commented Hans Jürgen Schmidt Managing Director of DAVR Deutsche Aluminium Verpackung Recycling GmbH Grevenbroich on the recently released figures Every year GVM determines the level of accumulation and the recycling of packaging waste in Germany also on behalf of The Federal Environment Agency Umweltbundesamt Taken into account are the rates of recycling of the various dual systems as well as the return of used packaging by other organizations and means of collection The current figures of GVM represent an important indicator for gauging the improvement of environmental characteristics This contributes more to sustainability than raising the proportion of recycling in certain aluminium products Completing material cycles is the right way to protect resources and save energy said Christian Wellner Managing Director of GDA Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e V Düsseldorf By recycling aluminium it is possible to save up to 95 of the energy required for primary production so valuable raw materials and resources can be saved The contribution to protecting the climate is also considerable According to calculations of DAVR based on the rates of recycling achieved in recent years annual savings ofgreenhouse gases amount to around 420 000 tonnes of socalled CO2 equivalents Expenditures for collection preparation and recycling as well as rates of material loss are taken into consideration This corresponds
