  • First EqUIP symposium: Inequalities, Growth and Place/Space | EqUIP
    recommendations to the EqUIP partners about more specific priority areas for future activities EqUIP has now developed a Symposium Reflection Paper summarizing the finding and the results of this discussion From left to right Dr Jacqui Karn Senior European Policy Manager ESRC Dr G S Saun Member Secretary of ICSSR Prof Sukhadeo Thorat Chairman of ICSSR Dr Cesare Onestini Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to India Dr Nafees Meah Head of RCUK India The core of this symposium has been represented by the exploration of the concepts of inequalities growth and cities urbanisation Whilst cities and rapid urbanisation were seen to provide a particular focus the significance of the rural aspect was emphasised as well in the context of development and growth and not just in the move from rural to urban areas In particular the concept and interpretation of growth was stressed as being wider of its economic meaning The natural environment was also seen to be a fundamental cross cutting aspect of this theme concerning especially environmental degradation and any natural events forcing populations to move and change The notion of encounter social cultural and its relation to identity and community ies within cities and regions was also considered crucial Other concepts highlighted as priorities to explore were Inequalities and growth City settlements cultural heritage and organisation of public spaces State market and communities Formal and informal structures production system consumer patterns business behaviour and labour The symposium scoped the theme in detail and based its discussion on questions such as What are the future priorities for EU India research collaboration in this area ensuring research excellence this means where collaborations between researchers in India and Europe add value and don t duplicate national activities What is the research capacity Are there factors to consider relating

    be brought to the attention of the Indian and European research community for further discussion exploration and analysis through the organisation of dedicated thematic Symposia events Symposia will contribute to a closer coordination and knowledge exchange of existing activities and future priorities Also symposia will provide the context to present and discuss research findings and future research agendas with policy stakeholders opportunities and priorities for joint initiatives between funders will be identified and explored with a view to the joining forces to support new joint programming activity where appropriate Over the next year the EqUIP platform will deliver six symposia on the following themes Inequalities growth and place space 19 20th October 2015 Delhi India Digital archives and databases as a source of mutual knowledge 3 4 th May 2016 Rome Italy Social transformation cultural expressions cross cultural connections and dialogue 28 29 th June 2016 Damdama Lake Gurgaon India Sustainable prosperity well being and innovation June 2016 Helsinki Finland Power structures conflict resolution and social justice September 2016 Mumbai India Final summary symposium October 2016 Ljubljana Slovenia More in particular these are the objectives of Symposia Stimulate the networking of existing collaborative projects working in areas of mutual interest Create new networks to identify and explore the state of the art research needs a thematic area Strengthen the production use and communication of existing research findings to policy makers and practitioners Share experiences of the challenges of undertaking collaborative research between Europe and India and how these challenges can be overcome and Identify broad research priorities for possible future collaborative initiatives between research funders A reflection paper will be produced after each symposium providing a state of the art overview of the topic area discussed including recommendations for future activities Reflection papers from all the events will be used

  • A Staff Exchange Scheme to tighten links between Indian and EU research agencies | EqUIP
    between the EU and India in the area of social sciences and humanities This will be pursued through gathering information on existing collaboration identifying barriers to and challenges of effective cooperation and in addition searching for priorities for future opportunities for research funding collaboration The Staff Exchange Scheme SES represents a key activity for this endeavour allowing staff members from EqUIP partners to visit other EqUIP organisations facilitating mutual understanding and building professional networks good relationships and trust across the partner organisations The participants to the 1st staff exchange hosted by the Indian Council for Social Science Research ICSSR on 15 16 October 2015 in Delhi It included visits to the University Grants Commission UGC the Indian Council for Philosophical Research ICPR and the Indian Council for Historical Research ICHR In particular by visiting each other the agencies exchange knowledge and experiences from core fields of action such as funding opportunities peer review systems and international collaboration The main focus is on intercontinental visits but the programme includes also visits within a continent Moreover although EqUIP is not yet engaged in joint funding activities the funding dimension may constitute a possible future development of the platform Mutual learning of each

    and more coordinated this is the objective a 1 and a half day Joint Learning Workshop that will be hosted by the Research Council of Norway in Lysaker Oslo on 15 th and 16 th September 2015 The Joint Learning Workshop targets especially funding agencies Approximately fifty representatives of European and Indian funding agencies and other stakeholders from India and Europe will take part to the event Besides EqUIP partners three additional Indian research institutions have been invited the Indian Council of Historical Research ICHR the Indian Council of Philosophical Research ICPR and the University Grants Commission UGC Moreover a list of stakeholders belonging to the world of European funding organisations Indian Not for profit Organisations or Non Governmental Organisations Non governmental International Funding Agencies and EU network commissions have been invited to participate in the JLW Participants will share and discuss their previous experiences on SSH EU India collaboration sharing best practices and identifying common approaches and barriers to effective research cooperation Then they will be asked to discuss a series of possible options for effective EU India multilateral funding format for Indo European SSH collaboration beyond the lifetime of the Equip project Possibilities are several and might include co coordinated calls bilateral calls opening up existing ERA NETS for Indian participation to quote a few Discussions will be supported through participative methodologies of brainstorming and policy making such as Card Games and scenario building through the Disney Method and the World Cafè Method The objective is bringing the discussion to a concrete planning level considering the definition of very specific issues such as the role and responsibility distribution finance and funding model design and management complaints transparency blaming accountability virtual common pot or the procedures of joint decision making priority selection peer review and project monitoring A report

  • The Scoping Report on Existing Collaboration and Future Interests and Opportunities has been published | EqUIP
    the EU One part was dedicated to highlight research priorities and strategic areas the other to outline how international research cooperation is approached by the different funding agencies The partners identified 38 research priorities and strategic areas which with the assistance of several academic experts have been eventually organised into five broad thematic areas These areas will constitute the basis for the organisation of six research thematic Symposia where each theme will be extensively discussed in a perspective of future deepening and cooperation Sustainable prosperity well being and innovation Inequalities growth and place space Social transformation cultural expressions cross cultural connections and dialogue Power structures conflict resolution and social justice Digital archives and databases as a source of mutual knowledge The report demonstrates a large interest in increasing the level of collaboration in the Social Sciences and Humanities between India and Europe The five areas identified above provide a broad and inclusive basis for scoping further potential activity and enabling multi disciplinary approaches It is essential that as these themes are developed the full range of Humanities and Social Science disciplines as well as other sectors if relevant are included in these scoping activities to ensure a balanced input Regarding the way partners organise their international collaboration in research funding the survey sought to identify particularly effective ways of working based on the experience of partners of India EU collaborations as well as the key challenges identified during these collaborations and the most positive and challenging experiences of participating in joint decision making procedures International collaboration in research funding is a very complex endeavour but detailed analysis of the information provided led to the identification of five key areas in this respect for which recommendations are provided Establishing roles responsibilities and priorities Communication and clarity Peer review and decision making
