    Festspiele Festivals The Association EFA Activities Gstaad Conducting Academy with Neeme Järvi and Gstaad Festival Orchestra apply now Gstaad Thursday 28 11 2013 The Menuhin Festival Gstaad has successfully established a number of academies in the Festival programme over the past years The Vocal Academy with Silvana Bazzoni Bartoli is already celebrating its fifth anniversary this year the Piano Academy with Andras Schiff is in its second year and the String Academy with instructors Igor Ozim Ettore Causa and Ivan Monighetti is taking place for the first time this year During the coming weeks a Baroque Academy with Maurice Steger also will be inaugurated this season From 7 27 August 2014 conductor Neeme Järvi who regularly has directed the Gstaad Festival Orchestra will lead a Conducting Academy for the first time The Conducting Academy will take place for three weeks in Gstaad and offers 20 young conductors the opportunity to work and learn in a professional environment The Gstaad Festival Orchestra will act as the partner to Neeme Järvi and the 20 students during the academy performing three Academy Concerts with the participants as well as a concert under the direction of Neeme Järvi in the Festival Tent as part of the Festival programme The expansion of the Gstaad Academy with this major project means that the Menuhin Festival Gstaad will be able to offer young musicians and interested listeners the most important and the largest Summer Academy in Europe All of the master classes are open to the public The Festival will grow in artistic diversity with this addition and provide exciting insights into the pedagogical aspects of conducting and the promotion of talented young musicians The Conducting Academy has as its goal the support and stimulation of promising young conductors affording them a stage to make themselves known

    program is far more diverse than the term chant would suggest The concert series begins Dec 1 at Gemmayzeh s St Maron Church with a performance featuring the Antonine University Choir and Beirut Chants Orchestra all under the baton of Joanna Nachef the first female conductor in the Middle East The series features concerts by several local choirs performing at AUB St George Orthodox Cathedral and the National Evangelical Church The program isn t restricted to choral performances and includes appearances by noted soloists both vocalists and instrumentalists Over the course of the event s three week schedule St Maron will also host performances by Russian cellist Boris Andrianov and pianist Katia Skanavi on Dec 9 The church will resonate with the music of German organ virtuoso Markus Karas on Dec 12 while choral ensemble La Chanterie de Beyrouth promise to perform a program of undisclosed seasonal favorites on Dec 22 St Elie Church in Qantari on the western edge of central Beirut has also scheduled several performances U K pianist Aleksander Szram will collaborate with Lebanese flautist Wissam Boustany on Dec 7 Another duo performance that is not to be missed on Dec 17 features Italian Francesca Leonardi on the piano and countryman Francesca Dego on violin Piano lovers will be pleased to learn that Tatiana Primak Khoury the artist in residence at Balamand University will be coming down to St Louis Capuchin on Dec 10 for a solo recital Her program will be a tribute to Lebanese composers On Dec 2 bass baritone Shady Torbey will combine his ample talents with pianist Kristina Raczynska for a duet show Having demonstrated his outstanding vocal abilities over the last few years youthful Lebanese countertenor Matteo al Khodr will perform a seasonally inflected solo program of early music at St Louis

    will hear his chamber symphonic choral and oratorian music from the youthful Violin Sonata No 1 to experimental Strophes Psalms of David or the moving Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima from the monumental Seven Gates of Jerusalem written for the occasion of the 3000th anniversary of the holy city to the moving Credo which is a unique profession of faith of the composer Through this incredibly rich oeuvre of Penderecki we will be guided by world renowned artists Yuri Bashmet Anne Sophie Mutter Lorin Maazel Valery Gergiev Charles Dutoit Jerzy Maksymiuk Jacek Kaspszyk But this is only a part of over 50 names of conductors and soloists who accepted invitations to the jubilee festival They will be accompanied on the concert stages by great orchestras Sinfonia Varsovia Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice Aukso Orchestra the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra as well as chamber ensembles choirs singers and actors The festival began in a very intimate atmosphere The programme of the inaugural concert 17 November included maestro Penderecki s chamber works 3 Miniatures for Clarinet and Piano String Quintet Suite for Cello Solo and Sextet for Clarinet Horn String Trio and Piano A real firework was the cast of this concert as some of the most outstanding artists from Poland and abroad have been invited to take part Miniatures for Clarinet and Piano was performed by the duo Darko Brlek clarinet and Marek Bracha piano and the String Quintet in the interpretation of the fantastic Dafô String Quartet with Jerzy Dybała double bass and Suite for Cello Solo presented by Danjulo Ishizaka Yet one of the biggest heroes of the evening was the Russian viola virtuoso or rather the world king of this instrument Yuri Bashmet In the performance of the Sextet Bashmet was
