    um die Gegenwart zu kümmern Joachim Sartorius Director Berliner Festspiele Festivals The Association EFA Activities 88th Varna Summer International Music Festival promises to be feast for music lovers Varna Wednesday 18 06 2014 The Varna Summer International Music Festival opened its 88th edition on 14 June 2014 with a symphony concert featuring Varna Philharmonic with principal conductor Svetoslav Borissov and young violin virtuoso Alehandra Soumm Special guest at the opening ceremony and concert was Kathrin Deventer Secretary General of the European Festivals Association EFA The festival runs until 8 August Kathrin Deventer addressed the full music hall with a touching speech about the importance of sharing artistic moments between artists and audience something unique that happens only at festivals The audience applauded the lavish concert programme of Pantcho Vladigerov s Vardar Overture followed by Tchaikovsky s Violin Concerto and Symphony No5 with standing ovation The Varna Summer International Music Festival is the oldest music festival in Bulgaria and one of the festivals with the longest tradition in Europe Rumyana Petrova who developed the 2014 festival programme said The 2014 edition has been developed following the ideas of the festival s original founders of 88 years ago richness of different genres balance between Bulgarian and world classical music integrity between different generations of artists featuring collaborations between Bulgarian and international artists and spotlight on local composers and performers The 2014 programme is structured in seven modules Symphony concerts Opera Chamber orchestras and ensembles Days of Czech music Summer Music Academy Varna music lab and Crossover Some highlights are the Symphony Orchestra of Asturias Spain the productions of Opera Varna with international guest soloists Camerata Orphica Bulgaria Romania Turkey Macedonia Josef Spacek with Graffe String Quartet Czech Republic Plamena Mangova with Svetlin Roussev Mitko Burov with friends and Seven Sacred Spaces by

    Music Foundation SCAMF the organiser of the Ankara International Music Festival The project is supported by the European Broadcasting Union EBU the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation TRT and radio stations in nine countries that broadcast classical music The MusMA V workshop was held in Ankara from 24 26 April 2014 organised by the Sevda Cenap And Music Foundation The theme Water also proposed by SCA Music Foundation is the topic of the coming MusMA project Within the framework of this project the following works have been added to the Turkish music repertoire and promoted abroad Siyah Kalem Dansı Black Pencil Dance composed for bağlama folk instrument with three double strings ney reed flute and electronic equipment by Mehmet Can Özer in 2010 Music for Piano by Fazlı Orhun Orhon in 2011 Hat Calligraphy for three percussionists by Onur Türkmen in 2012 Tanrının Dostları Friends of God composition based on the verses of Goethe and Hacı Bayram ı Veli for twelve voices by Yiğit Aydın in 2013 Can Bekir Bilir has been selected as the composer for MusMA V In the Ankara workshop a wind quintet was formed by SCA Music Foundation under the direction of conductor Mr Orhun Orhon The musicians included Cem Önertürk flute Selçuk Akyol oboe Nusret İspir clarinet Ozan Evruk bassoon and Cem Akçora french horn The quintet has played the pieces that were composed around the theme of Water by Can Bekir Bilir proposed by the Ankara International Music Festival Turkey Orazio Sciortino proposed by the Emilia Romagna Festival Italy Daan Janssens proposed by the KlaraFestival Belgium Adrien Tsilogiannis proposed by the Festival de Wallonie Belgium Mikolaj Majkusiak proposed by the International Festival Wratislavia Cantans Poland and Jani Golob proposed by the Ljubljana Festival Slovenia With this workshop which was moderated by contemporary Turkish composer
