  • Civil Dialogue | European Civic Forum
    genuine European Civil Dialogue publicly calling EU institutions to include organised civil society in the European decision making processes Based on this Manifesto the ECF initiated together with other organisations representatives from the Liaison Group and in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee EESC a Civil Society Day The first edition took place in 2009 and it gathers every year since then about 200 institutional and civil society representatives in Brussels Exchanges and debates especially with MEPs resulted in mobilising for a statute of the European association The European Parliament adopted in 2010 an positive resolution on this matter EP 84 2010 following a strong mobilisation and a collection of signatures from a majority of MEPs This campaign was managed by the ECF through the European Alliance for the Statute of the European Association Since 2009 the Civil Society days have gone through different aspects linked to participatory democracy European Year Of Citizen Alliance EYCA It s about us it s about Europe Towards a European Democratic Citizenship As these were handed over to Ms Reding who was then European Commissioner in charge of citizenship they gave the EYCA the opportunity to challenge European institutions but also national and subnational policymakers within the member states Acknowledged as a collective and high quality achievement including by the independent EYC evaluation ordered by the Commission the recommendations are now awaiting an answer more than a year after their handover in December 2013 This fact shows the long way to go until associations voice is being effectively recognised in European civil dialogue Civil Society Europe CSE As a contribution to the European Year of Citizens We have already mentioned the 80 recommendations drafted by the European Year of Citizens Alliance EYCA named It s about us it s about Europe Towards a European Democratic Citizenship As these were handed over to Ms Reding who was then European Commissioner in charge of citizenship they gave the EYCA the opportunity to challenge European institutions but also national and subnational policymakers within the member states Acknowledged as a collective and high quality achievement including by the independent EYC evaluation ordered by the Commission the recommendations are now awaiting an answer more than a year after their handover in December 2013 This fact shows the long way to go until associations voice is being effectively recognised in European civil dialogue The acquis of this organisations gathering achieved through the EYCA is now continued through Civil Society Europe the European Coordination of Organised Civil Society Officialised on 16 December 2014 in Rome with a strong impulsion by the ECF and launched publicly in the European Parliament premises on 3 February 2015 CSE is pursuing two key objectives creating an enabling environment for horizontal exchanges between civil society organisations and movements across Europe being influential in shaping the agenda on transversal issues of common interest for organised civil society in Europe Civil Society Europe will therefore provide a permanent framework to share experiences and best practices to

    community life or public action and a high potential for driving transformative change Social Enterprise of the Year rewarding businesses or not for profits founded on the basis of social goals which are written into the enterprise s vision and mission the pursuit of which brings in positive social change in communities Volunteer of the Year rewarding individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to democratic life and to the development of a community or cause be it through a volunteering role in an NGO or in another form of an organisation or community association including informal groups and Media Initiative of the Year rewarding professional media and media based collaborative initiatives which give citizens effective tools to engage and bring about positive change in their communities successful media initiatives will have used different tools for engagement and enhanced citizens participation fostered an informed citizenry and enabled the development of a common civic space Following the nomination period open to all according to the rules of procedure a judging panel meets in order to select four nominees per category according to precise guidelines 2014 Edition The European Civic Forum held its first European Democratic Citizenship Awards on Saturday 3rd May 2014 in Strasbourg The ceremony was hosted by the Strasbourg City Council In its opening address the Mayor of Strasbourg Roland Ries welcomed ECF initiative to celebrate civic engagement and activism as instrumental in giving a new impetus to European democracy in the current context of political and institutional renewal The ceremony rewarding the most innovative and creative approaches to the development of a true European active citizenship began with a short retrospect by ECF President Jean Marc Roirant on ECF accomplishments since its creation nearly ten years ago in Strasbourg in the Council of Europe MEP Catherine Trautmann and Nawel Rafik Elmrini Deputy Mayor who have supported the initiative since the very beginning as well as Brigitte Degen from the European Commission task force on the European Year of Citizens were also present to reward the winners To find out the complete list of winners read our press release here 2015 Edition The European Civic Forum launched the European Democratic Citizenship Award in 2014 with the aim to promote citizens engagement and reward outstanding initiatives and civic actors whose day to day struggles give real substance to European values create ownership of the public space and improve the lives of our communities in terms of democracy social justice and universal access to rights After the selection process by an international Jury and online public voting which triggered nearly 10 000 voices recorded remarkable initiatives and candidates were designated as the 2015 laureates To see the names of the winners and their achievements please read our press release 2016 Edition The 2016 edition is now open to applications If you think you have what it takes to be a potential ECA Laureate you just need to fill in the online form before 20 May 2016 If your application is selected

    renovation Malaga 2010 Within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the 27 and on 7 8 and 9 May the provincial council of Málaga welcomed 650 participants from the 21 countries in the European Union Managers volunteers activists academics experts and active members of the organised civil society from hundreds of European NGOs met for three days to work towards a common objective progress in the construction of a set European social citizenship The fight against social exclusion for human rights education in European civic values equality public social services and interculturality were just some of the open challenges covered by the workshops As well as reflecting regaining sharing and learning one of the basic objects of European Civic Days 2010 was to set up a dialogue with the institutions and to achieve good understanding to tackle social problems and needs from a joint point of view Budapest 2011 More information to come soon Vilnius 2013 On 12 and 13 December 2013 the Closing Conference of the European Year of Citizens 2013 took place at the Lithuanian Parliament Seimas in Vilnius The event has been organised by the European Commission through its European Year of Citizens 2013 Taskforce in close cooperation with the European Year of Citizens Alliance EYCA and the Lithuanian Presidency Though without being the European Civic Days this event closed the European Year of Citizens with more than 300 NGO representatives together with European institutions representatives and Lithuanian officials EYCA s Chairman also ECF president handed over a shorter and more focused set of EYCA Policy Recommendations to Vice President Viviane Reding of the European Commission on the morning of 13 December just after the Official Opening of the Closing Conference The Conference focused on three different aspects namely The Role of Civil Society in European democracy EU Citizenship in action How citizens can influence policy making Participative and representative democracy Two sides of a same coin Athens 2014 The 2015 edition was somewhat particular Example of the failure of the neoliberal paradigm and current European policies to insure well being for all Greece has been presiding the Council of the EU for this first semester 2014 facing tough financial and economic challenges a high level of unemployment and recession the out coming of which can be read in the ballot boxes last month during local and European elections In the general transitional period we find ourselves in we need to seek ways to overcome this ideological crisis and fragmentation of driving forces in order to scale up local fights and give them a global transformative dimension We need to reconnect politics with the grassroots and help translate local fights and resistance into political action This year s forum looked at key challenges stemming from the European Year s of Citizens legacy and bridging the way to the European Year for Development basing on two reference documents ECF manifesto Equality Solidarity and Democracy for Europe the European Year of Citizens Alliance EYCA policy recommendations It s
